Fabric weight is one of the few honest measurements in clothing, and one of the least understood. Once you can read it, a lot of what you already own starts to explain itself.
What the numbers actually measure
GSM stands for grams per square meter: a one-meter square of the fabric, set on a scale, gives you the number. Most of the world uses it, and it appears on quality menswear sites, fabric shops, and the better product pages.
Ounces — usually written as "12 oz denim" or "10 oz canvas" — means ounces per square yard. It's the American convention, and it dominates in denim and workwear, where weight is practically a badge.
The two systems describe the same thing. One ounce per square yard is roughly 34 GSM, so that 12 oz pair of jeans is about 407 GSM. The conversion matters less than the habit of noticing that both numbers exist and point at the same physical fact: how much material is actually there.
What the number doesn't measure is thickness, exactly. A dense, tightly woven poplin can weigh more than a lofty, airy flannel that feels twice as thick. Weight tells you about substance; your hand tells you about the rest.
A feel for the ranges
Numbers only become useful when they attach to garments you've actually worn. These are the neighborhoods, not precise borders:
- Under 150 GSM — lightweight. Summer shirting, voile, most poplin, the T-shirts that come in packs of three. Cool against the skin, quick to dry, quick to wrinkle, and often quick to wear through at the elbows and hem.
- 150–300 GSM — midweight. Oxford cloth shirts, standard chinos, most sweatshirt fleece at the upper end, the T-shirts people describe as "substantial." This is where most of a working wardrobe lives.
- 300–450 GSM — heavyweight. Real denim (that 12 oz pair is 407 GSM), duck canvas jackets, thick loopwheeled sweatshirts, flannel that blocks wind instead of just suggesting warmth.
- Above 450 GSM — outerwear territory. Melton wool coats, waxed canvas chore jackets, the things that stand up on their own when you set them down.
Why denim gets its own dialect
Denim kept the ounce system because weight is the whole conversation there. An 8 oz pair feels like summer chinos. Twelve ounces is the classic jean. Fourteen and up is the raw denim that takes a month to stop feeling like armor and three years to become the softest thing you own. The number predicts the relationship: how long the break-in, how deep the fades, how many decades the pair might last.
Weight is not a grade
The tempting shortcut — heavier equals better — is wrong often enough to be worth unlearning.
A 120 GSM silk shirt is supposed to be nearly weightless; that's the entire point of silk. A linen shirt at 180 GSM will outlast a cotton one at 220 because linen fiber is simply stronger. And a cheap heavyweight tee made from loosely spun cotton can pill and sag while a lighter, tightly combed one holds its shape for years.
Weight interacts with three other things: fiber (what it's made of), weave or knit (how it's held together), and finish (what was done to it afterward). A number in isolation grades nothing. What it does reliably predict is character — drape, warmth, opacity, and how the garment will move through time. Light fabrics flow and fade fast. Heavy fabrics resist, then mold to you.
The honest use of GSM is matching weight to purpose, not maximizing it. The person who buys a 450 GSM hoodie for a climate with two cold weeks a year hasn't bought quality. They've bought a thing that lives in a drawer.
Reading your own closet by hand
Here is where the numbers become quietly practical. Almost nothing hanging in a closet has its GSM printed on the label. But the information is still there, stored in your fingers.
The shirts that get reached for in April are lighter than the ones that get reached for in October — most people are already sorting by weight without a vocabulary for it. Picking up two similar shirts, one in each hand, and noticing which one has more to it: that's a GSM comparison, uncalibrated but real. People who log their wardrobe in Vitrina sometimes notice the pattern from the other direction — the pieces they wear most cluster in a weight range they never consciously chose. The hand knew first.
That kind of noticing changes future decisions without turning them into research projects. A product page that lists fabric weight is telling you something specific; one that only says "premium cotton" is not. The 220 GSM tee that became a favorite gives you a number to look for again. The 130 GSM one that went sheer gives you a number to walk past.
The weight of care
Weight also explains why clothes ask for different treatment. Light fabrics dry in an hour on a hanger and resent the dryer. Heavy knits hold water like a sponge and stretch under their own wet weight, which is why the good sweater dries flat. A heavy raw denim can go months between washes not because of any rule, but because dense fabric holds its structure and sheds surface dirt in a way that 6 oz cloth never will.
None of this is maintenance strategy. It's just what the material is, and living with it accordingly.
The number under everything
Fabric weight is unglamorous knowledge. It doesn't trend, and no one compliments a jacket by guessing its GSM. But it sits underneath almost every quality you can feel — why one coat cuts the wind and another only decorates it, why the old T-shirt outlived the new one, why the jeans got better instead of worse.
Once the ranges are familiar, something shifts in how a closet reads. The clothes stop being a wall of colors and start being a set of weights, each one suited to certain days. Getting dressed becomes a matter of reaching for the right amount of fabric — which, on most mornings, is the only decision that was ever really being made.
